Import CSV file into Excel

To view TitleLeaf CSV (UTF-8) data in Excel, use the “Import Text File” wizard.

Using the “Open” command to view CSV data in Excel has inconsistent results

On macOS, that menu item is located in the “Get External Data” submenu of the “Data” menu (ie, Data > Get External Data > Import Text File).

On Windows, refer to Microsoft’s support site. The Windows user interface varies slightly from the screenshots below but has the same intent.

Upon selecting the “Import Text File…” menu item, the “Text Import Wizard” window will open.

In “Step 1”, select:

  • The “Delimited” radio button

  • The “Unicode (UTF-8)” option in the “File origin” dropdown

Then click the “Next” button.

In “Step 2”:

  • Check only the “Comma” checkbox in the “Delimiters” section

  • Select the double-quote option in the “Text qualifier” dropdown

Then click the “Next” button.

In “Step 3”:

  • Specify the “isbn” column format as “Text”

  • Specify the “publication date” column format as “Date” with “MDY” selected in the dropdown

Click the “Finish” button.

A final “Import Data” window will appear. Choose the import location, most likely a “New sheet”.

Click the “Import” button.

The data should now be in an Excel spreadsheet window.
